First sentence: “The December wind clawed at Allie’s face, stinging her eyes.”

Plot: Fifteen-year-old Allie Grant lives crippled by her illness. Though kept in isolation, she’s never alone: A spirit named Song lurks in the silence of her bedroom.

When Song reveals its dark nature on the night of her recital, the show ends in tragedy. Verging on death, Allie’s taken in by an uncle she’s never met.

Julian claims to be a Muse with power over music and answers that’ll heal her. The cure she needs is rare, requiring of him a difficult sacrifice. Allie soon suspects her uncle has a secret that’ll turn her world around.

But with days left to live, she might fade without learning the truth…like the finishing chord of a song.

My thoughts: Where do I begin? I really enjoyed this. Mariella has built this world filled ith Muses, Changelings, Elves, Dragons and other creatures. I think most of us have heard about these things before but she introduces it in a new way. And I’m not just saying this because she’s my friend. I really liked this book!

The story is interesting, fast paced and at times I was like: “whoa!?” You never know what is going to happen next, and I don’t know about you but I love that in a book. Who wants predictable?

I feel so bad for Allie in the beginning. And then I get pissed at her. She’s so stupid at times (one point in particular but I won’t spoil) I don’t even know what to do. I was screaming at her, really. After that I didn’t really feel like she deserved the help people were trying so desperately to get her. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t spend the rest of the book being mad at her. I got over it. Someone else I got mad at was Allie’s mom. I don’t know what it is with parents and lying to their children. Every god damn book I’ve read lately seems to have that element in them. It pisses me off. At least in this book Allie reacts the way a kid is supposed to react when she finds out her mother has been lying to her. So kudos to you for that Mariella! Actually all of Allie’s reactions are normal. She reacts the way a fifteen year old girl would. She freaks out at appropriate times and she starts screaming at the exact right moments. She acts like a human girl, which is sometimes what I miss in books. Mundane reactions to things.

There are these great characters in this book. Apart from Allie herself. There’s Julian, and without spoiling anything I’m gonna try to say what I like about Julian. He’s such a great guy, I mean really. After such a long time all he wants to do is help Allie. He’s also amazing with his wife, I want their relationship! There’s a scene with Julian and Allie that was just WOW. Too many feels. Also sometimes he speaks Italian *swoons*. Then there’s Tyson. Ah Tyson. He’s got an English accent. I love accents, haha. Also he’s funny, and clumsy as shit. How do you fall out of a tree twice? *can’t stop laughing*. And then there’s the thing with his eyes, his rage and his endless need to blow stuff up. I love Tyson. Enna is such an adorable lady, really. Can she be my mom? There are a lot more great characters in this books but these were the ones I felt was the most important. You’ll have to read it to find out about the rest.

I also thought I’d mention Mariella’s writing style. I really enjoyed it. I kind of felt like I was right there next to Allie as she explores (follows someone around) the palace for the first time.

Well done Mariella. I’m super proud of you! ❤
