Goodreads Rating: 5/5

Plot:

Harper Price, peerless Southern belle, was born ready for a Homecoming tiara. But after a strange run-in at the dance imbues her with incredible abilities, Harper’s destiny takes a turn for the seriously weird. She becomes a Paladin, one of an ancient line of guardians with agility, super strength and lethal fighting instincts. Just when life can’t get any more disastrously crazy, Harper finds out who she’s charged to protect: David Stark, school reporter, subject of a mysterious prophecy and possibly Harper’s least favorite person. But things get complicated when Harper starts falling for him–and discovers that David’s own fate could very well be to destroy Earth.

My thoughts:

I bought this book because it seemed really interesting, but I thought it would be a book with a dimwitted heroine who only cared about her looks when reading the first sentence. It turned out to be one of the best books I’ve read so far this year and I’m going to order book number 2 as soon as possible.

Harper is a fun and witty character. She is so much more than a spoilt stereotypical southern belle. She is smart, tough, and compassionate. She gets frightened but is not a coward. I would love to have her as a friend. I also love the fact that she doesn’t run from her new mission, although she has doubts, she embraces it and does her best to be as good as she can. She is never selfish although she still takes her own needs and wishes into consideration.

David is awesome too and I loved his and Harper’s relationship which goes from enemies to frenemies to friends. They had a good and entertaining banter and their interactions were always interesting. In fact, all the other minor characters were interesting and added their own thing to the story.

The story and theme felt so fresh and were really interesting to read. The entire plot was amazing and it was very hard to put the book down. It has a good tempo and it never gets boring. Everything is in there for a reason and nothing felt like it was put in there just to be a filler. The ending was just killer and I can’t wait to read the next book!

Do I recommend it?

Yes, I do! It is amazing and everyone should read it! Go buy it now!
